Surroundings
 
Bussang is the highest village along the Moselle, situated at a height of 600-1200 metres in the Haut Vosges, in the southern part of the Parc Naturel Régional des Ballons de Vosges. In Bussang the river Moselle takes its rise, flowing through the Vosges to Luxemburg and Koblenz in Germany to the river Rhine.
 
The number of possibilities for daytrips and activities is enormous.
A few tips:
  • numerous walking routes starting form Bussang into the surrounding hills, with the source of the Moselle at 2,5 kms
  • the famous Theatre du Peuple, a gift of the author Maurice Pottecher to the people of Bussang in 1895
  • 150 meters from Le Chevalier you will find the Casino of Bussang.
  • near Bussang: fishing ponds, a  swimming pond in the Moselle, rock climbing, parapente, ATB rental and cycling routes
  • Voie Verte: 30 kms of asphalted cycling/skating path, smooth as a mirror, former railway track to Remiremont. Starting point (or rather terminal point) right on our doorstep!
  • Recently opened in Le Thillot (at 10 kms): former copper and silver mines of the Dukes of Lorraine, 16th-18th century
  • Le Rouge Gazon, a (cross country) ski piste in the neighbouring village of St. Maurice, at a height of 1200 metres, also offering various beautiful walking routes (among others Lac de Perches, which leads back to Bussang)
  • Ballon d’Alsace at 15 kms (1250 metres): skiing, cross country langlauf, walking (waterfalls near the top)
  • Top of the Drumont at 8 kms: ferme auberge, wlking
  • The Route de Crête: motoring tour along the hilltops of the Vosges, Grand Ballon, Col de la Schlucht, ferme auberges (farmhouses that offer food and drink)
  • Hartmannswillerkopf (Vieil Armand): a special daytrip, 45 minute drive along the Route de Crête, to a battlefield of the First World War, with an impressive walk along the trenches, war monument en cemetery and beautiful views over the Rhine valley
  • The Alsace wine route starts in Thann, 20 kms from Bussang: a route alternating pretty towns (the medieval towns of Riquewihrs) with wine tasting in old chateaux (Ribeauville, 3 castles)
  • Haut-Koeningsbourg castle, and close-by the monkey zoo of Montagne des Singes or the Volerie des Aigles (birds of prey)
 
Nearby towns worth visiting
  • Eguisheim, Kaisersberg, Rouffach (storks, remarkable square)
  • Mulhouse (50 kms) is a nice town with the National Automobile Museum (many Bugattis), the Railway Museum, Electropolis (Electricity Museum) and the zoo
  • Colmar (60 kms) is a beautiful, picturesque old town, also known as Little Venice
  • Strassburg (80 kms) needs no further explanation
  • Thann (20 kms): the Eye of the Witch, the river Thur, pretty town centre, vineyards, chapel
  • Dornach prides itself on the Goetheanum, the world centre for antroposophy
  • Basel, in Switzerland, is only a 1,20 hour-drive away (95 kms)
  • Ronchamp, at 43 kms a 45-minute drive, boasts the chapel of La Dame du Haut (1954), by the French/Swiss architect Le Corbusier, considered to be one of the finest examples of religious 20th century architecture.
